BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Bruins have figured out how to win at home.
Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist, and Mike Knuble added two assists in the Bruins’ 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.
Boston failed to win in its first four home games, but the Bruins are unbeaten in their last three and have two straight wins.
“The key is to get the first goal, get off to a fast start,” Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said.
Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring for the Bruins on a power play at 11:01 of the first period with his fifth goal of the season.
“Ten of the 14 games we’ve played, we let the other team score first,” Thornton said. “The key for this team is not letting that happen, not playing from behind.”
The Bruins took advantage of power plays, scoring three goals in four opportunities.
Boston goalie Andrew Raycroft stopped 31 shots, and the Oilers went 0-for-5 on the power play.
“The biggest difference for me this year is my comfort level,” Raycroft said. “Last year I was looking over my shoulder, thinking if I had a bad game I was going to get sent down.”
Jarret Stoll tied it 51 seconds into the second period when he redirected a shot from Ryan Smyth.
But Boston scored three goals in the second. Martin Lapointe broke the tie at 12:25. Thornton made it 3-1 with his third goal of the season, and Sandy McCarthy opened the lead to three goals at 16:36 with a wraparound.
“I’m not married to the shot clock, but I know one thing for sure: We’re fishing too many pucks out of our net trying to kill penalties,” Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said.
Raffi Torres made it 4-2 early in the third period and Shawn Horcoff closed the scoring with a short-handed goal with 8:32 to go.
“We didn’t have our legs early, but we found them and finished strong,” Oilers left wing Ethan Moreau said.
The Oilers are 2-2-1 on their current six-game road trip that ends Thursday in Minnesota.
Notes: The Bruins capped a three-game homestand. … Boston swept two games against Edmonton last season. … There was a 10-minute delay in the first period because the glass above the sideboards next to the scorers’ table broke. … Edmonton added defenseman Alexei Semenov to the roster just before the game. He replaced Brad Isbister, who has a bone chip in his neck.
