GREENWOOD – The Jackson-Silver American Legion Post in Locke Mills honored American veterans Tuesday who gave their lives to keep the country free .

In his keynote address, Post Commander Dan Grover made it clear that Veterans Day is when American veterans, men and women, should be remembered for their sacrifices for their country.

He also expressed his thoughts on today’s crisis in Iraq.

“Today we have another call: Our nation’s stand against terrorism. Our men and women are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq to protect our freedom, and in Iraq, 392 American men and women have been lost.

“Saddam is gone, and it’s time to give Iraq back to the Iraqis.”

Grover noted that despite claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, none have been found there.

“It seems to me money has been the reason for the Iraq War, and it’s time to bring our troops home,” said Grover.

He also pointed out that his remarks were not the opinions of the American Legion as a whole.

“Millions of dollars have been raised by the Republican Party for next year’s presidential campaign, and I feel that money is coming from oil interests in Iraq. It is not right for our brave Americans to be dying for that reason, and we should return Iraq to its people,” he said.

Grover also introduced a special guest, Vietnam veteran Al Pelletier, who sang a song he wrote several years ago about the brave efforts of American soldiers during that ill-fated conflict.

Also speaking was post Auxiliary President Martha Stowell, who said, “I want to thank all those who have served their country to keep us free. We owe so much to you.”

Other features of the program included patriotic songs played by the Mahoosuc Music Makers Band, prayers by Post Chaplain Rodney Hanscom, a 21-gun salute by the Jackson-Silver Firing Squad and the playing of taps.

The auxiliary served refreshments.
