Acadian music, food

RUMFORD – The Oxford County Democrats are sponsoring an evening of Acadian food and music on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Eagles Hall. Featured musician Jim Roy of Dixfield has been playing the fiddle since he was 7. When he entered one of Ken McKenzie’s talent shows as a 12-year-old, MacKenzie hired him to play with his band.

Roy was an original member of the Countrymen. He later played in a Texan band called the Rednecks, which was a warm-up band for Conway Twitty.

Joining him on Nov. 21 will be his son Jon.

Linda Petrie, chairwoman for the Acadian supper, said, “Jim is a reminder to many of the Acadian people of this area of days gone by when it was common for folks to gather in the kitchen or parlor for a round of music, dancing and singing.”

Those appreciating Acadian culture, as well as those who would like to learn more, are invited to join the county Democrats at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, for Acadian food and fiddling and music by the Roys. The menu will include poutines and chiard, with hot dogs and fries available. Tickets are $6 per person and will be sold at the door.
