EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Much like the NBA Finals, the New Jersey Nets had no answer for Tim Duncan – even with Jason Kidd producing a triple-double.
Duncan had a season-high 31 points and 12 rebounds and the defending champion San Antonio Spurs defeated the Nets 85-71 Wednesday night in the first meeting between the teams since the championship round.
Tony Parker added 17 points in just his second game of the season and Manu Ginobili had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Spurs won their second straight game since Duncan and Parker returned to the lineup.
Grizzlies 107, Magic 97
ORLANDO – The Memphis Grizzlies withstood a season-high 36 points from Tracy McGrady and handed the Orlando Magic their seventh consecutive loss, 107-97 Wednesday night.
Forwards Pau Gasol and James Posey had 28 and 24 points, respectively, in leading the Grizzlies to their second road win of the season.
Heat 88, Cavaliers 83
MIAMI – Eddie Jones scored 25 points and Lamar Odom added 14 points and 10 assists, helping Miami become the final NBA team to break into the victory column with an 88-83 win over Cleveland on Wednesday night.
LeBron James had 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting for Cleveland, which lost its 26th straight road game since February and failed in its bid for the franchise’s first three-game winning streak since April 2002.
SuperSonics 104, Bucks 99
MILWAUKEE – Rashard Lewis had 31 points and nine rebounds to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to a 104-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.
Lewis, the league’s second-leading scorer, was 12-of-19 from the field as Seattle improved to 3-0 on the road.
Hornets 96, Jazz 89
NEW ORLEANS – Baron Davis had 23 points and nine assists, helping the New Orleans Hornets snap a two-game losing skid with a 96-89 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
David Wesley scored 17 and Steve Smith came off the bench to add 15 points in 20 minutes, hitting all seven of his free throws.
Hawks 99, Suns 94
PHOENIX – Dion Glover scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the Atlanta Hawks to their first victory in Phoenix in nearly 12 years, 99-94 Wednesday night.
Stephen Jackson had 18, Jason Terry scored 17 and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 16 for the Hawks, whose last road victory against the Suns came on Nov. 15, 1991.
Atlanta had lost 16 of its last 22 games overall against the Suns.
Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion scored 22 points apiece for the Suns, whose modest two-game winning streak was snapped.
Jackson hit consecutive 3-pointers at the open the fourth quarter, starting an 11-2 run as Atlanta extended a one-point third-quarter lead to 84-74 with 8:48 to play.
Phoenix twice pulled within a point, the final time on Marion’s 3-pointer from the left corner that cut the Hawks’ lead to 95-94 with 1:12 to go.
The Suns had several chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute. Marbury missed a layup after a steal by Joe Johnson, then stole the ball off a defensive rebound. Phoenix worked the ball to Johnson, who missed a 3-pointer from the top left of the arc.
Terry added a pair of free throws with 19.4 seconds remaining, giving the Hawks a three-point lead. Johnson missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 11 seconds left and, after gaining possession on a jump ball off the rebound, Marbury missed a contested 3-pointer from the same spot.
The Hawks, who led from Glover’s opening 3-pointer 29 seconds into game, used a 12-2 run to open a 22-11 lead with 5:44 left in the first quarter. Glover scored six of the points during the run for Atlanta, which made 10 of its first 16 shots from the floor.
The Suns pulled within eight points at the end of the period, 32-24, and further cut the lead to 42-41 on Marion’s 12-foot jump shot with 2:46 to go in the first half. Terry made a technical free throw and added a 3-pointer as Atlanta took a 49-45 lead at halftime.
Notes: With the Hawks’ victory, Milwaukee is the last team to be winless at America West Arena, the Suns’ home since the 1992-93 season. … Marbury or Marion has led the Suns in scoring in six of Phoenix’s seven games. … Atlanta center Theo Ratliff’s streak of 44 consecutive games with a blocked shot was snapped. … Suns rookie Leandro Barbosa made his NBA debut at the start of the second quarter. Barbosa, a 20-year-old guard, returned to the team from Brazil after spending time with his terminally ill father.
