ORONO (AP) – A deer that broke through a window at a University of Maine building and was found running loose inside died of stress after four people managed to subdue it.
A janitor spotted the buck in the Donald P. Corbett business building shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday and contacted the campus Public Safety Office. Officers, in turn, notified game wardens after the deer refused to exit through an open door.
“The poor thing was tired,” said Public Safety Officer Deb Mitchell.
It took four people to lasso the deer and place a blanket over its head.
“We were able to subdue it without getting kicked,” Game Warden David Georgia said.
The buck died a short time later.
“This deer died in our arms because of the stress,” Georgia said. It would have lived if it weren’t for the stress, according to the warden.
The buck suffered a gash to its inside rear leg, as well as a broken antler.
In a similar incident on campus last year, a deer jumped a few feet off the ground and broke through the first-floor window of Shibles Hall, landing in an Information Technologies office.
This time, Mitchell said officers decided to leave the deer alone until a game warden arrived.
“We let it be so it wouldn’t get too excited,” Mitchell said.
The buck had seen its reflection in the window glass and tried to attack itself, Georgia said, noting that the incident occurred during the middle of rutting season.
