BETHEL – Superintendent David Murphy praised SAD 44 staff members Monday for their innovative contributions during a staff development program.

“This was the best staff development day we have had in the last 20 years,” said Murphy, “as we focused on the No Child Left Behind Act requirements set by the federal government in every subject area.”

He said that another focus was on procedures for curriculum development and other topics designed to guarantee continued quality education for district students.

“All curriculum groups are up and running and have met at least once. And these meetings were what led up to today’s workshop. Many thanks have to be given to the staff and to Curriculum Director Lee Graham who has worked all summer and fall to organize the committees,” he said.

More workshops are planned later in the school year to make sure all district schools are in compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act as well as the Maine’s Learning Results.

In other business, the board approved Murphy’s nomination of three staff members to coaching positions.

Mark Thurlow was given the nod to head the fourth- and fifth-grade basketball program at the Woodstock Elementary School. Mike Pelletier was appointed junior varsity boys basketball coach at the Telstar Middle School, and Mike Bailey was chosen as junior varsity girls basketball coach, also at the Middle School.

SAD 44 includes the towns of Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock.
