SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – At his request, a high school quarterback’s record-setting – yet tainted – pass was erased from the books Wednesday.

Springfield Southeast High School quarterback Nate Haasis had asked the Central State Eight Conference to nullify a 37-yard pass in his final game because his coach made a deal with the opposing team to let him complete it.

Conference officials voted Wednesday that the pass won’t count. The throw had put Haasis over 5,000 career yards.

“The bottom line is the conference honored Nate’s request,” said Chuck Hoots, Springfield Southeast principal and conference president.

Southeast coach Neal Taylor has acknowledged he made a deal with coach Antwyne Golliday of Cahokia High right before the end of the Oct. 25 game: Cahokia, which had a big lead, would be allowed to score again, uncontested, and then Haasis would meet no resistance on the record-breaking pass.

Cahokia let Haasis to make the completion, giving the senior 5,006 yards for his career. That set a new conference record and made him one of 12 Illinois high school quarterbacks to pass for more than 5,000 yards.

Cahokia won the game 42-20.

Taylor did not immediately return a telephone call Wednesday evening from The Associated Press.

A few days after the game, Haasis wrote a letter to the football conference disowning the record.

Haasis said the record “would have been great … something to share with my teammates.”

But in his letter, he said the final pass should be dropped “to preserve the integrity and sportsmanship of a great conference for future athletes.”

Hoots said the controversy ended with Wednesday’s vote.

“Nate’s request reveals that sportsmanship is alive and well in the CS8 Conference,” officials said in a statement.
