DIXFIELD – Idle town office chatter this week culminated in the adoption of a unit of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq by the Town of Dixfield.

“We like to be the first ones to do anything,” said Town Clerk Vickie Carrier.

Carrier’s nephew, Scott Drown, 26, a 1994 graduate of Dirigo High School in Dixfield, is a member of the unit.

“We were talking about it in the office and this adoption came about because I asked Scott if there was someone over there who didn’t get mail and he said there are some soldiers who don’t,” she added.

As a result of the adoption, Carrier said the men and women in the unit “would love to receive” chocolate chip cookies, Chapstick, powdered Gatorade, sun screen, beef jerky, tuna in a pouch, toothpaste, Pringles, cup-of-noodles, non-scented hand lotion, heavy-duty one-gallon Ziploc bags, eye drops, baby wipes, Oreo cookies, envelopes, cards or letters.

“We’re calling on friends and neighbors in Dixfield who wish to help with our mission. Monetary donations will help greatly with postage,” Carrier added.

Contributions may be dropped off at the Dixfield town officer by Monday, Dec. 1, “so that we can get everything packaged and in the mail as soon as possible,” she said.
