The American Legion’s recognition day will coincide with a national dedication.

SABATTUS – Commander Ron Caron of Post 135, American Legion, presented the Board of Selectmen with a proposal for a community-wide event that will coincide with the dedication of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., on May 29.

They agreed to support the World War 11 Veterans Recognition Day, and the Sabattus Legion will create a project steering group to organize the event.

“We want every World War II veteran to be honored on this day, even if they cannot be at the actual dedication in Washington, D.C.,” Caron said. “We also know that such a civic event is more than just a veterans program. That is why we sought the support of the community’s leaders. That is why we are part of the steering group and eagerly seeking other organizations to join with us.”

The cornerstone of the proposal is a ceremony on May 29, the day the national memorial will be dedicated. Full details of the plan are still to be worked out, but it includes a World War II Expo with a parade, entertainment and a display at the post home.

Special awards will be presented to all the World War II veterans in the community, giving residents an opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women. The proposed project will also include a prayer breakfast and a walk-a-thon to honor the World War II generation with proceeds to benefit a project.

Post members are asking Sabattus World War II veterans and/or their family to contact them to update the list. The Legion would like to obtain a short history of each veteran, describing his/her part in the war.

Public Law 106-380 calls upon the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to collect and preserve histories of Americas war veterans. Items included are oral histories and documentary materials such as letters, maps, photographs and home movies. If requested, the items will be copied and returned.
