MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – A truck dropped at least five barrels containing hazardous materials along two of Vermont’s interstate highways Saturday, forcing the three sections of the roads to be closed for cleanup.
None of the barrels broke open as they fell to the road surface.
“We were lucky in that respect,” said Mo Forcier, duty officer at Vermont Emergency Management.
There were no reported injuries.
Police were still looking for the truck and its driver early Saturday evening, authorities said.
Forcier said the labels on the sides of the blue barrels bore the name Ollsocyanate and indicated that the material was, in his words, “very hazardous to humans.” He said it was believed that the material is used in wallboard adhesives.
A search of the web site of the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry failed to produce any matches. Forcier said Ollsocyanate was believed to be a brand name and that officials were still working to determine the material’s chemical makeup.
The first of the incidents was reported at about 9:25 a.m., state police said.
Police issued bulletins throughout the day urging motorists to avoid the closed sections of the interstates and to report to authorities if they spotted blue barrels along any other sections.
Police secured the errant barrels and were awaiting the arrival of crews from a company that contracts with the state for cleanup of hazardous spills, Forcier said.
