Six towns assist in fighting Sunday night blaze.

RUMFORD – Firefighters from six towns fought a house fire on Route 108 Sunday night, dousing the flames before they destroyed the home.

An investigation on where and how the fire started begins Monday, said Ben Byam, deputy chief of the Rumford Fire Department.

No one was hurt in the fire.

Apparently, the fire started somewhere in the porch of the ranch-style home at Number 308. It spread into the main part of the house before a neighbor called the department at 6:21 p.m. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Located about two miles from Rumford’s central fire station, the house was beyond the town’s hydrant system. Towns including Mexico, Dixfield, Canton, Peru and Andover were called to help get water to the scene and prevent the fire from destroying the entire home. Much of the home was saved, Byam saved.
