BETHEL – Representatives from several presidential campaigns gave reports at the Nov. 13 meeting of Oxford County Democrats meeting at Telstar High School.
Jesse Connolly of Portland reported on the campaign of Sen. John Kerry, highlighting the senator’s appearance at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner. Connolly and Lisa Baldacci of Bangor are staff for the Kerry campaign in Maine.
Miriam Laster of Norway spoke for Gov. Howard Dean’s campaign and encouraged individuals to vote online for the Fare Share Common in Norway as a meet-up site for the first Wednesday in December. She reported on the appearance of Dean at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner.
Bernie Reiner of Oxford spoke on behalf of Gen. Wesley Clark. County chairwoman Cathy Newell announced she receives regular e-mail updates from most of the campaigns in New Hampshire and will pass along notices of events to the e-mail list.
Andrea Quaid of Congressman Mike Michaud’s staff introduced Tim Trafford, the new field representative for Oxford County. He will be holding weekly Wednesday office hours in Rumford and Norway, as well as in Hiram once each month. Bernie Reiner expressed his thanks to Michaud for recent work on behalf of veterans.
Sen. Bruce Bryant and Rep. John Patrick presented the legislative report. Bryant has been serving on the Fish Hatchery Commission and the Dairy Task Force. Patrick reported that his committees, Labor and Legal and Veterans Affairs, have been working on carry-over bills, and that there will be a special session for bill signing in December.
Toby Guzowski of the House Democratic Caucus and County chairwoman Cathy Newell reported good progress in candidate recruitment. Candidates Linda Petrie of District 93, Terry Hayes of District 94 and Marge Medd of Senate District 13 spoke, in addition to Bryant and Patrick who are seeking re-election. Marlee Turner, District 97, was unable to attend. All are planning formal announcements in the coming months.
Linda Petrie reported that the Acadian musical supper event will be held at the Eagles Hall starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at $6 per person. It was decided to offer take out meals in addition to the dinner. Those wishing to reserve take-out meals may call Linda Petrie or John Patrick. Music will be provided by Jim and Jon Roy, and Bob Parise will be the chef, preparing poutines and chiard.
Democratic Party caucuses will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8. Cathy Newell reported that most towns have caucus convenors, and that a complete list will be turned in to the Maine Democratic Party by Dec. 1. Training will be held in January. Mike Broderick reported on initial meeting of the Platform Committee and urged individuals with issues they would like considered to contact him. There will be more information at upcoming meetings.
Oxford County was well-represented at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner with more than 30 attending.
