WOODSTOCK – Recreation Committee Chairman John Fitzmorris told selectmen Tuesday that his group has $15,346.90 to spend on a renovation project to convert the old fire station into a recreation and community activity center.

Fitzmorris said the money has come through gifts from residents. The town shoulders no responsibility for the costs of the project.

“We have $15,346.90 to spend right now out of a balance of $17,130.89,” he said, “so we are cutting from the current budget a total of $1,783.99. Some items concerning the completed project can be left for later, but at least we hope to get the place up and running with what we have.”

Fitzmorris said volunteers are already at work, with the windows in and some other minor details completed.

The group wants to get the septic system ready to go before freeze up so work remaining after that will consist of inside work that can be done despite the weather conditions.

When finished the building will conform with the American Disabilities Act, and offer play areas, a community meeting room, a kitchen, bathroom facilities, and will be open for use by youth and other community groups.

The Recreation Committee hopes to have it open this winter.

Town Manager Vern Maxfield also told the board that work on the addition to the new fire station is proceeding. Foundation work is completed and most of the steel framing is in place.

He said contractors expect to have the building enclosed in another two or two a half weeks. Once the outside work is done, finishing the inside will go ahead during the winter.
