AUBURN – Girl Scout Troop 1603 is offering babysitting service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at the United Methodist Church, Park Avenue.
The Scouts will accept children ages 3 to 10, but they must be potty-trained. Children must bring a bag lunch. The troop will provide snack, lemonade, and entertainment. The cost is $10 a child; for families with multiple children, the cost is $10 for the first two children and $5 for each additional child. Needs help
LEWISTON – The Abused Women’s Advocacy Project needs help for Thanksgiving this year.
They have a Feed-a-Family program every year that relies mostly on the community to help with donations. The donations are low for Thanksgiving. AWAP still needs 32 baskets.

Tree sale
WINTHROP – The Winthrop Rotary Club will hold its annual Christmas Tree Sale on three weekends starting Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 29 and 30, at the Fairfield Insurance office, Main Street. Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The club will sell freshly-cut fir trees from a local tree farm. Proceeds support local Rotary projects, which include scholarships, support of Winthrop Food Bank and youth programs.

Society grant
BRUNSWICK – The Coastal Humane Society has been awarded a grant from the American Humane Association of Washington, D.C., in acknowledgment of its recent success in increasing the number of animals adopted.
The society will use the grant to purchase equipment and supplies to enable it to expand its mobile and satellite adoption efforts. The society has taken in nearly 1,200 cats and kittens and nearly 700 dogs and puppies this year.
The society does not euthanize for lack of space, only when severe medical or behavioral conditions make it mandatory and is committed to finding the right home for every adoptable animal.
Hotel helps
AUBURN – Lafayette Hotels, owner of 19 hotels in Maine and New Hampshire, will offer free rooms to families who have children or relatives in the hospital over the holidays.
The program, “Home for the Holidays,” will be offered over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Visitors are screened by the hospital, then referred to the hotel by the hospital. The program is also available to families facing an emergency or extreme hardship such as a death in the family or having their home destroyed by fire.
The Fireside Inn and Suites in Auburn, owned by Lafayette Hotels, is participating in the program.
Sunday teaching
LEWISTON – A teaching on the encyclical of Pope John Paul II, “Ecclesia de Eucharistia,” will be presented by Sister Elizabeth Madden from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall.
Madden is a member of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament in Waterville, a contemplative non-cloistered Eucharistic community with spiritual ministries in the Catholic church. She has completed studies in theology, scripture and spirituality and is certified in Ignatian spirituality and direction.
Light refreshments will be served starting at 9 a.m. and all are welcome.
Haircuts
LEWISTON – The Vineyard Christian School of Lewiston will hold a fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the school, 9 Foss Road. Experienced stylists have donated their time and the proceeds to benefit the students. Those wishing can walk in for a trim or a new look for $10. A hot dog lunch will also be available for $2.
