1920 – 2003
NORWAY – Martha (McAllister) White, 83, passed away on Monday, Nov. 17, at her home in Norway, surrounded by her family, following a long illness.
Born in Paris Hill, March 1, 1920, she was the daughter of Deleon and Annie Parris French.
After the death of her mother and father, she was adopted by Thomas and Estella Garrett from Portland. She attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1939.
She worked as a homemaker as she raised her two children, Thomas and Winnifred. She later moved to Gray, where she owned and operated a dress shop for several years. She then worked at the Casco Country Store in Gray as a buyer. She was also involved in the opening of the Game Farm in Gray to the public.
She was past president of the Gray Senior Citizens, member of the Gray Extension and worked on the Gray Meals on Wheels Program. She was also nominated for the Jefferson Award for her many civic duties and caring deeds. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary in Norway.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and entertaining friends. Martha was always noted for her ability of giving of herself in times of need to anyone who needed help, especially her family and friends. On August 2, 1995 she was married to her childhood friend, Lawrence White and they made their home in Norway.
She is survived by her loving husband, Lorrie of Norway; her two children, Thomas Neal and wife, Clarice of Andover and Winnifred Crandall and husband, Vaughan of Saco; a stepson, Bruce White and wife, Judy; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
