FARMINGTON – The long-awaited grand opening of the University of Maine at Farmington’s observatory was canceled due to wet weather Wednesday night.

Organizers rescheduled the opening to 7 p.m. Thursday, hoping clear weather will be in the stars for the area.

According to a release from the college, attendees will see the roof roll off and the 12-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope operate under computer control through a wireless network link from the Farmington campus. They will also see how the observatory will enable regular astronomical observing programs for the community and astronomical research opportunities for UMF students.

If rainy weather is in the cards again on Thursday night, the event may again be postponed. To check for any possible further postponement, call the observatory at 778-7159.

Land for the observatory, which is on the left side of Mosher Hill Road 1.1 miles off of Route 43, was donated by UMF professor Thomas Eastler and his wife, Sue.
