The poet is a lot like a scientist. They both observe and report. While the scientist reports in a piece of prose, the poet reports in a poem. In other words, poetry can be another way to process experience. What a great reason to include poetry in as many content areas as possible!

In October, teachers wrote a number of poetic forms in an interactive workshop led by Paul Janeczko. Teachers examined poems and discussed how each poem might be used in different content areas. They left the workshop with material they could use immediately in their classrooms to support student learning.

Offering this professional development workshop to teachers is one of the many ways that the Lewiston School Department creates schools in which educators are learners who continually improve performance.
