Two 18-wheelers were involved in the head-on collision.

WILTON – Two people complained of injuries after a tractor-trailer collided head on with another big rig loaded with wood chips Wednesday. The driver of one was summoned for failing to yield the right of way, police said.

Wilton firefighters assisted with traffic control around roads that were closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. The crash happened at the junctions of Main Street, Route 2 and Maxwell Road.

Wilton police officer Kevin McCutcheon said according to officer Ed Leahy’s report, an 18-wheeler operated by Carol Moss, 34, of Shepherdsville, Ky., was attempting to turn left on to Main Street from Route 2.

Moss claimed she didn’t see the 18-wheeler that was loaded with wood chips and operated by Jacob Hale, 24, of Jackman that was heading west toward Rumford, McCutcheon said.

Hale attempted to avoid the collision and pulled to a ditch, McCutcheon said, but couldn’t avoid Moss’s rig and the two collided. Both ended up on the property of an antique shop, the officer said.

“Everything was contained in the vehicles,” he said.

Moss and her passenger, Arthur Goodcoff, each complained of arm pain. Neither was transported to a hospital by ambulance, he said.

Hale’s rig, registered to E.J. Carrier Inc. in Jackman, and the wood chips he was carrying weighed 98,000 pounds, McCutcheon said.

Moss was issued a ticket for failing to yield the right of way, he said.

Leahy estimated $10,000 in damage to Hale’s rig and $25,000 to the 2004 Freightliner Moss was driving. The latter was registered to US Xpress Leasing Inc. out of Oklahoma.
