Jackets 3, Red Wings 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dan Fritsche became the first Ohio native to score a goal for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Marc Denis stopped 25 shots for his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career.

The 18-year-old Fritsche’s wrister early in the third period was the first goal of his NHL career. The Parma, Ohio, native was a second-round pick in this year’s draft.

Rick Nash and Andrew Cassels added goals for the Blue Jackets, who were beaten 5-1 by the Red Wings on Wednesday in Detroit.

The Wings, who fell to 14-3-1 in the series, won the previous two meetings this season by a combined 9-2 score. Detroit also came in unbeaten in five games (4-0-1) while the Blue Jackets were winless in five (0-3-2).

Fritsche skated down the left wing, faked a pass and rocketed a shot from the top of the circle inside the far post to make it 3-0 just 3:11 into the final period. The goal came on his 14th career shot. Kent McDonell earned his first NHL assist on the score.

Columbus led 1-0 after a period on Nash’s 11th goal of the season.

Rostislav Klesla half-whiffed on a drive from the point, and the puck lazily went through the slot where it tipped off Trevor Letowski’s stick. The puck bounced to Nash who was waiting at the doorstep at the 8:53 mark.

Manny Legace gave up a soft goal to make it 2-0.

Cassels was playing the puck after Geoff Sanderson sent it around the back boards. From a hard angle near the right goal line, Cassels wristed a shot at Legace, who was tight up against the near post. But the puck somehow got through off Legace’s glove.

Sanderson’s assist gave him a three-game point streak.

Denis was solid throughout. The Wings’ best chance in the opening period came when Boyd Devereaux had an open net in front of him just seconds after Nash’s goal.

Pavel Datsyuk had prime scoring chances in both the second and third periods, firing one shot over the goal and then taking a pass from Brett Hull and shooting wide at 4:15 of the third.

Denis gloved Kirk Maltby’s blast from the right hash with 3:17 left.
