FARMINGTON – Selectmen adopted a policy Tuesday outlining rules for a new swap shop at the town’s recycling station.

Usable goods, with some exceptions, are expected to be available for use by others in an effort to reduce disposal costs and protect the environment.

Town officials commended the Recycling Committee members for their efforts on the project as well as town employees Jim Kiernan, Ron Jalbert and Ted Collins, who built a new building.

The grand opening of the new universal waste and reuse building is scheduled at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at the center.

The new building replaced a deteriorating, unsafe structure. It was funded by a recycling capital investment grant matched by the town, according to Planning Assistant Sabra Stirling.

People can select items on a first come, first serve basis.

Items must be in good condition, with no recalled items and no loose or broken parts.

Anything accepted must be in working order, and the managers of the facility will reserve final judgment as to what is accepted.

Acceptable items include housewares, sporting goods, small appliances, clocks, radios, lawn and garden items, toys in good condition, books, tools, wooden furniture and other small household items.

Items not accepted are clothing, broken items beyond repair or that have sharp edges, upholstered furniture, fuel operated appliances, food or other perishable items, used food containers and car parts.

Also, not accepted are televisions, computers, monitors, mattresses, box springs, futons, sleeper sofas, bedding, refrigerators, stoves and similar large appliances, paint, oil, antifreeze, chemicals or other hazardous wastes.

Patrons are asked to see station attendants in regards to disposing of these items. For more information, people can call Public Works Director Mitch Boulette at 778-2191.
