1928 – 2003
CANTON – Ernest Leroy Howe, 75, a resident of Lesmore Apartments, died Friday night, Nov. 14, at Canton Nursing Home.
Mr. Howe was born in South Portland on Sept. 30, 1928, and was the son of Charles and Ethel (Faucette) Howe. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and was a veteran of World War II.
On Aug. 4, 1950, he married the former Carolyn Rogan. He was a graduate of Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and was employed at Cushmans Bakery in Portland and later went to work at the Brunswick Naval Shipyard as an electrician until his retirement.
He was also a member of Odd Fellows Lodge of Portland. During retirement, he enjoyed staying at his home in Coos Canyon, on the Swift River in Byron, and traveling back and forth to Homestead, Fla., where his daughter and son-in-law own a small farm.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Rogan Howe of Dixfield; a daughter, Cynthia Mejides and her husband Andre of Homestead, Fla.; a son, Michael Howe of Byron; his brothers, Robert of Utah, Arnold of Falmouth, Charles of New Hampshire, and Thomas of South Portland; and a sister, Esther Howe Pratt of Falmouth.
