HANOVER – Town officials want a long-term plan for improving the increasingly populated Howard Pond Road.

To do that, they agreed to set aside $5,000 to hire Main-Land Development Consultants of Livermore Falls.

Town Clerk Clem Worcester said officials want a plan that could be completed in stages. The first focus for reconstruction is likely to be from the Gardner Roberts Memorial Library northwest for about three-quarters of a mile along Howard Pond Road.

“We have problems in that area with water runoff. Some residents on the road have had driveways washed out,” he said.

The overall long-term plan will likely involve some construction and ditching.

“The road has been ignored for years and we’ve had complaints,” he said.

Selectmen plan to look over the Main-Land plan in the spring, then turn to trying to find ways to fund the necessary work.

Worcester said Main-Land may also provide selectmen with an opinion on how to improve the South Shore Road.

Also at last week’s board meeting, selectmen named Bethel Animal Control officer Osmond Hart as Hanover’s animal control officer for a one-year term. The town set aside $700 a year for animal control matters. Hart replaces Dan Peare.

The board also decided not to hold a December selectmen’s meeting. The date for the January meeting will be announced later.
