AUBURN – Nathan T. Young, 82, formerly of Portland, died Nov. 26, after a long illness in Auburn.

He was born in Marblehead, Mass., June 4, 1921, the son of Augustus Young and Katherine Messervey Young.

As a small child, he moved with his family to Portland, attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School. He attended Wentworth Institute, Boston, until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He returned from the Navy to work in his family’s business, Young’s Auto Radiator, and together with his sister ran a very successful business until their retirement in 1985.

He was an honest, hardworking man and was respected in the business community for his integrity.

He traveled to Newfoundland many times to pursue his lifelong hobby of fishing. He made many friends in Newfoundland and loved the undeveloped countryside.

Because of his strong work ethic, he found retirement unfulfilling, began working in his son-in-law’s business and was a great asset.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading political books. He also studied the stock market as a hobby, and enjoyed following the market during his retirement.

He was a skilled carpenter and built his cabin on Rangeley Lake. He loved spending time there with his family and Rangeley was very dear to his heart. His family continues to enjoy the cabin that he built over 40 years ago.

Following his daughter’s death in 1990, he provided a great deal of emotional support and encouragement to her twin daughters.

He valued education and he committed himself to ensuring his granddaughters would receive a college education.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Young Casey and her husband Ted of Portland; two daughters, Jill A. Young of New Gloucester, Janice Keeley and her husband, Stephen of Falmouth; his daughters’ mother, Edith Young of Portland; and five grandchildren, Lynne, Jessica, Briana, Jack, and Jonathan.
