INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Colts quarterback Peyton Manning felt a twinge in his right elbow during practice Wednesday and was scheduled for an MRI exam.
Manning limited his workout to protect his throwing arm, but coach Tony Dungy said he did not believe Manning would miss Sunday’s game against New England.
“He felt a twinge in there during our walkthrough this morning, so we took a lot of the work off of him,” Dungy said.
Manning was unavailable after practice. Dungy said Manning was to have the MRI later Wednesday, but it was not clear when there would be word of the results.
With Manning limited, Brock Huard – the only other quarterback on the Colts roster – worked with the first team.
Manning, having the best season of his six-year NFL career and a leading contender for the MVP award, has never missed a start.
He’s on pace for a career-high in yards passing, a career-low in interceptions and his 3,105 yards and 67.4 percent completion percentage lead the NFL.
Manning’s troubles are the latest chapter in an injury-plagued season for the Colts (9-2).
Edgerrin James, the NFL’s rushing champion in 1999 and 2000, missed three games earlier this season with two broken bones in his lower back.
Marvin Harrison, who set an NFL record with 143 receptions last year, has missed time with a strained right hamstring. He returned last Sunday against Buffalo and is expected to play this weekend.
Starting left tackle Tarik Glenn is expected to miss his sixth game in seven weeks with a left knee injury and tight end Marcus Pollard, a former Pro Bowler, is listed as questionable with a sprained left knee.
Pollard has missed the last two games.
Despite the injuries, the Colts’ still have the NFL’s No. 2-ranked offense and the league’s best passing offense – primarily because of Manning’s great season.
His passer rating of 98.8 is second to Tennessee’s Steve McNair, and Manning needs one more touchdown pass for his sixth straight season with 20 or more TD passes.
One of Manning’s best attributes has been his durability.
His streak of 91 straight starts is the longest by any quarterback to open a career and the second-longest by any active quarterback. Green Bay’s Brett Favre has started 184 in a row.
If Manning starts Sunday, he will tie John Unitas’ franchise record.
The Colts are entering a key two-game stretch this week against the Patriots (9-2), who lead the AFC East. Next week, the Colts travel to Tennessee (9-2), which is tied with Indianapolis for the AFC South lead.
