This letter is in response to Angela McFerren and her letter to the editor “Keep the devil out of school” (Nov. 23).
As an alumnus of Lewiston High School, class of 1957, I found Ms. McFerren’s diatribe about “keeping the devil out of school” a sad comment on our time. In looking at the LHS Alumni Directory, I do not see her name as having attended LHS. If she had walked the hallways of the school and knew its history and traditions, she might have a leg to stand on, but no, she prefers we should all follow her lead and be politically correct.
Lewiston High School opened its doors in 1932 and has had a long tradition being known as the “Blue Devils.” All of us who are graduates are very proud of our association with the school, classmates, teachers and the spirit of the student body. I would find it extremely sad if the school administrators would bow to such a ridicules suggestion as changing the LHS mascot Blue Devil.
What would she prefer the Lewiston High School teams to be knows as, maybe the “Daisies” or the “Sissies.” Where is her school spirit?
Richard A. Me’nard, class of 1957, Simi Valley, Calif.
