Maine shoots 57 percent from the floor in a 99-50 win.

ORONO – Mark Flavin scored 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting to lead the University of Maine to a 99-50 victory over the University of New England.

The Black Bears held a 44-26 lead at the half and increased the lead to as much as 53 points on 65 percent shooting in the second half. For the game, the team shot 57 percent from the field while out rebounding the Nor’easters 51-28.Four other Black Bears scored in double figures, including Jon Wallingford (12 points, three three-pointers). Matt McManus scored 20 points to lead the Nor’easters.

Colby 83,

Southern Maine 64

WATERVILLE – Colby College exploded for 52 points in the first half on the path to an 83-64 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the opening round of the Maine Event tournament Friday evening.

Michael Westbrooks from Dublin, Ireland led the White Mules (2-2) with 20 points with six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Matt Forlizzi added another 19 points, while Patrick McGowan tallied 17 points and three assists in the win.

Derek Lovely of Oxford had 12 points to lead the Huskies (1-3). Jesse McKinnell pitched in with eight points and eight rebounds.

Colby shot 15 field goals, including five 3-point conversions and 17-for-19 from the foul line to take a 52-32 halftime lead.

Husson 85, St. Joseph’s 77

WATERVILLE – Buddy Leavitt dazzled the fans with 24 points as Husson took an 85-77 win over St. Joseph’s in the opening round of the Maine Event tournament Friday.

Three other Braves (1-0) scored in double digits, including Dwayne Ailey with 19 points and Scott Griffin with another 16 tallies. Husson took a 38-30 lead at the half and found themselves with the same margin at the end of regulation.

Steve Monteiro had a double-double for the Monks (1-3) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Chad Pulkkinen led St. Joseph’s with 16 total points in the loss.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 4, Genesco 2

WATERVILLE – Sophomore forward Adam Dann had a pair of goals to fuel Bowdoin to a 4-2 victory over Genesco State College in the first round of the Bowdoin-Colby Face Off Classic men’s hockey action Friday.

Following Dann’s opening goal, Mike MacDonald evened up the contest at 1-1 for Genesco (4-3-1) at the 10:45 mark of the first period.

The Polar Bears (2-1) responded with three unanswered goals from Adam Mackie, Dann and Jon Landry in the second period.

Bowdoin turned to a defensive game plan in the third period and held Genesco to just one goal.

Polar Bear goalie Dave Sandais made 20 saves, while Jeff Phelps stopped 36 of 40 shots for Genesco.

Colby ties U.S. Under-18 National team

WATERVILLE – Brian Chisholm scored the goal and first-year goaltender Ben Grandjean stopped 27 shots as Colby battled to a 1-1 tie with the United States Under-18 National team in an exhibition game as part of teh Bowdoin-Colby Face Off Classic men’s hockey tournament Friday.

Chisholm scored with three seconds left in the second period on a power play goal with assists from Jake Bayley and Cory Ernst. The U.S. team tied the game with just 1:13 left in regulation on a goal from Tom Fritsche. Grandjean had a superb third period in net for the White Mules, making 13 of his 27 game saves.

Jordan Pearce fended off 36-of-37 shots on goal for the U.S. team.
