LOCKE MILLS – Jackson-Silver American Legion Post and Auxiliary held their annual membership supper recently. Dues were received from several members and anyone who has not yet paid their dues is urged to do so soon.

The group observed Veterans Day with Cmdr. Dan Grover speaking. As a team performed a flag folding ceremony, he explained the meaning of each fold. Grover Auxiliary President Martha Stowell went to the Veterans Memorial in the village where a wreath was placed at the monument. The auxiliary served refreshments to those who attended.

The post and auxiliary and the Greenwood Historical Society later hosted a benefit supper and dance for the Jones family who had lost their home to fire.

Recent monetary donations have been made for the flagpole at the Oxford Hills Christian Center, to the Christmas gift shops at Togus and the Western Maine Veterans Home, to the Telstar Girls’ Softball Team and to the Bethel Rotary Club’s Christmas for Children fund. Plans are being made to buy gifts for members and veterans at Ledgeview Living Center and for veterans from this area who are residents of the Veterans Home.

The auxiliary still has a supply of Blue Star banners to give out to any family in the area who has someone serving in the military. Anyone who wishes to have one to hang in their window should contact a member of the unit or call Olive Risko at 665-2909.

The next meeting is scheduled for a 6 p.m. potluck supper on Thursday, Dec. 4. This will be followed by a tree-lighting ceremony of those trees on the grounds for whom the bulbs have been purchased in honor of, or memory of a veteran or member of his immediate family. There is still time to purchase these bulbs by calling Leah Deegan at 975-2375 or 824-2477.

The Second District Auxiliary President and other guests will also be attending this meeting. In case of severe weather for this and the next few meetings, they will be held the following Thursday.

The annual family Christmas party is scheduled for Dec. 11 at which time members are to bring a gift suitable for either sex.
