OXFORD – Guy E. Rowe Elementary School Principal George Sincerbeaux told the SAD 17 board on Monday that a long anticipated Academic Support Center finally opened.

He said the center was long desired by the staff and would be voluntarily manned by staff to help students who are struggling, but traditionally have not gotten enough help.

The center had seven students referred from grades three and four on its opening day on Monday.

After a student is referred, teachers will check with parents and arrange a time the student can go to the center.

The center is not for disciplinary referrals, according to Sincerbeaux, but for those just needing extra support.

In other business, the board also acknowledged Robyn Sessions, as staff member of the month for December. Sessions is the district’s assistant director of food services.

“She has been outstanding over a long period of time and is one who is supportive of other employees,” said Superintendent Mark Eastman.

“She has been interim director on two occasions and is responsible to provide 4,000 meals per day,” he said.

Sessions has been with SAD 17 for 15 years.

Concerning fiscal matters, the board approved awarding copier paper and computer supply bids, accepted a donation of cotton balls and were updated on the contingency expenses approved to date.

Boise Cascade Corp. was awarded the copier paper bid at $18.54 per case, for 880 cases.

A Wal-Mart donation of 2,000 sealed bags of cotton balls, worth approximately $3,500, was approved. The school district will decide how to use the store’s surplus inventory. Some may be used in art projects, it was noted.

Eastman said that to date $16,280 of the district’s $150,000 contingency budget had been used. The money was used to tile four classrooms in the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway; complete the parent drop-off area and make boiler repairs at the Oxford Hills Middle School in Paris; do emergency electrical work at the Hebron Station School and to cover disallowed construction costs the Hebron school.

After the regular meeting, the board went into executive session to hold three readmission hearings for individual students and one hearing to expel a student at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
