Maine people who are eligible to receive a property tax rebate or rent refund should file by the Dec. 31 deadline, state Sens. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, and Neria Douglass, D-Auburn, said in a joint statement.

The maximum refund is $1,000, which will be determined by Maine Revenue Services based on the applicant’s eligibility.

To be eligible, people must have lived in Maine for all 12 months of 2002. In addition, total 2002 income must have been at or below $29,900 for a person who lived alone or $46,300 or less for a person who lived with a spouse or dependents.

“Remember, this circuit breaker rebate helps renters and owners with limited income,” Douglass said. “It is in addition to the homestead exemption for owners, who should check if they have filed with their municipal office.”

“As a member of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee, I fully understand how important increased property tax relief is to our communities. That is why it has been a key priority of mine,” said Rotundo.

Forms are available at municipal offices, the Department of Human Services, the Senate Democratic Office or from Maine Revenue Services online at www.maine.gov/revenue. Those seeking refunds may also file their information by telephone at (207) 626-8461.
