Inside renovations include new staircase, seating, restrooms and electrical upgrade.
LEWISTON – After being closed for nearly a year, the Franco-American Heritage Center at St. Mary’s will reopen on Sunday, Dec. 7, for a Maine Music Society concert. Although the Performance Hall will not be completed, many new features will be evident on the first and second floors.
In the interior there is a new and enlarged stage, a new elevator and handicapped access entrance, a new double staircase, new men’s and ladies’ rooms, a lower lobby, coat room, canteen area, refinished hardwood flooring, electrical upgrade, partial painting of the first floor and new theater-style seats.
The exterior repairs include a 95 percent completion of the Cedar Street facade masonry work, repairs to the roof and a new entrance off Oxford Street alley with handicapped access.
To date the renovations amount to approximately $2.4 million and as the fund-raising continues, other repairs and changes will take place. The goal is to raise $4.5 million to complete the project.
Anyone wishing to make a donation is encouraged to do so as all contributions are tax deductible and naming opportunities are available for items such as stained glass windows, pews and seating. Engraved plaques will recognize all those who have made the building a reality.
Within a few weeks, it is expected that one of two exterior memorial terraces will also be constructed. Engraved pavers are four different sizes and range from $200 to $500 each as a way to remember a loved one.
The main floor is open for rentals and will comfortably seat 425 people. Round tables and chairs can also accommodate banquets, weddings, receptions, business meetings and all forms of entertainment ranging from theatrical and educational, but especially musical.
