1942 – 2003

NORWAY – John M. Akin, 61, retired U. S. Navy, of Norway died at his home on Sunday, Nov. 30.

He was born in Albany, N.Y., on July 14, 1942, the son of John S. and Margaret Mills Akin. He graduated from Bordentown Military Academy in New Jersey. He received an Associate’s Degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management from Paul Smith College in Saraneck Lake, N.Y., and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy retiring after 22 years. He did seven tours in Vietnam. He was a flight engineer on P3 planes. He received the Presidential Unit Commendation, the Air Medal in Vietnam, the Korean Expeditionary Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal and South Vietnam awarded him the Vietnam Service Medal.

After retiring from the service he was an Allstate Insurance representative in Lewiston for 12 years. He was a Norway Selectman. He married Gail Stanwood on Nov. 17, 1973.

He is survived by his wife of Norway; four sons, Dale Kissick of Altanta, Ga., David Kissick, Dana Kissick and Darryl Kissick all of Norway; two daughters, Donna Yoerin of Vero Beach, Fla., and Della McFerren of Hawaii; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and best friends, Bruce and Linda Skinner of Norway.
