AUBURN – David Rogers of Auburn, joined by his wife, Wanda, accepted membership into the Maine Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, pledging an oath while holding the Grand Union Flag, which was raised over the Continental Army at Cambridge, Mass., in January 1776.
The Navy Jack rattlesnake flag was adopted by the society in the oval room at Montpelier in South Thomaston last summer.
Rogers’ eligibility for membership is based on his Maxim/Maxham family lineage in the Paris area. Isaac Maxim, the father of Sir Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun, is the first cousin of Rogers’ third great-grandfather, Zenas Maxim, who were both the grandsons of Nathan.
Nathan Maxim removed to Paris in 1788 and served in the Revolutionary War. He is seventh generation to Pilgrim Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower. Many Maxims in the Paris area can join both the state and Mayflower societies.
