1921 – 2003

LEWISTON – Carolyn Wood, 82, died Thursday, Nov. 27, at CMMC of progressive Deficit Aphasia.

She was born May 11, 1921, on the Stetson Farm, Greene, the oldest daughter of John Camp and Sylvie Parker Wood. She started school in the one room schoolhouse on Quaker Ridge, Leeds, with the only other pupil, Irma Additon (Mower). She attended Wallace School in Lewiston while staying with an aunt and uncle, Gladys and Frank Hoy.

Patten School in Greene, was attended from third to seventh grade, but skipped a grade as her comprehension of studies was rapid and complete. When her father became ill she resided with the Hoys and graduated from Jordan Grammar School and Lewiston High School class of 1938. Her B.A. degree was obtained from Bates College in 1942.

While in Lewiston she was a devout member of the United Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a Girl Scout Leader.

In 1942 she moved to New York City and attended Columbia University where she received a Secretarial Certficate through the Business School and was employed in the Appointment/Placement office 1943-l944. 1944-l950 she was Secretary to the Editor of Times Book Review; 1950-1955 Editorial Assistant at Crown Publishers, Inc., 1955 she moved to Columbia University Law School where she was Assistant to the Dean, then Assistant Dean until her retirement, Dec. 3, 1986.

While in N.Y.C. she was a patron of the Metropolitan Opera, Friends of Mostly Mozart, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y.C. Ballet, CentraI Park Conservancy and remained a member of Bates College Key Club in Lewiston. She was an active member and volunteer at Riverside Church, as well as volunteer and committee member at Morningside Residence.

Miss Wood spent many summers in Maine, with the Hoys at Wells Beach and Lewiston, later years in Greene at Oak Ridge with sister, Ruth M. Wood. Nov. 2000, found her back in Lewiston at Montello Heights until her decreasing physical abilities caused her to become a resident of Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, Lewiston.

She leaves a brother, Gilbert P. Wood and wife Catherine of Greene; sisters, Ruth M. Wood of Greene, Mary W. Greaton and husband Winston of Lewiston; six nephews and spouses, John C. and Lindy V. Wood, Turner, Alan G. and Sheila Mae Wood, Greene, Mark D. and Margit Wood, Poland, James and Cynthia Greaton, Sudbury, Mass., Robert and Jana Greaton, Sammamish, Wash., and Everett F. Greaton, Los Angeles, Calif.; seven grandnieces and nephews; two great-grandnephews; and two nieces.

She was predeceased by her mother; father; aunt; and uncle.
