RANGELEY – Regional wildlife biologist Chuck Hulsey was the guest speaker at the November meeting of the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association.

Concentrating on the area’s three major hunts of deer, moose and turkey, Hulsey focused mainly on the deer management system, a year-round job in Maine. He also shared information on the recently completed moose hunt. There were 2,075 harvested in 2003, a success rate of 80 percent. Moose, it seems, are the hardest herds to count and the collection of biological data is difficult.

Hulsey concluded his talk by explaining that feeding the deer herd might result in spreading chronic wasting disease should it get a foothold in the eastern states.

The program was preceded by a wild game potluck dinner, hosted by the Eagle’s team led by Bill and Ina Booker.

All team leaders were invited to a recognition breakfast at the Saddleback Motor Inn. This will allow a time for feedback and future planning.

Tim Baker presided at the meeting and reminded members that help was needed with distribution of Thanksgiving baskets. He noted that the club will sponsor the Rangeley Girl Scouts along with the Boy Scouts.

The Dec. 11 meeting will begin with a potluck dinner followed by the annual Christmas party. Everyone is invited to the 5:30 p.m. gatherings. Those attending are asked to bring a main dish, salad or dessert and a small gift to share via the traditional Chinese auction. The clubhouse is on Old Skiway Road in Oquossoc.
