The bottler says it is apparently an isolated incident.

BRIDGTON (AP) – Two people became sick after drinking Poland Spring bottled water, police said Thursday, and the grocery store that sold the water has pulled it off the shelves.

At least two gallon-sized bottles apparently were contaminated with an unidentified chemical, WCSH-TV reported.

A 40-year-old man became violently ill after drinking the water Wednesday and had to be taken to a hospital. A 4-year-old girl who drank the water Thursday became less seriously ill.

The Food City store in Bridgton said it pulled all one-gallon containers of Poland Spring water off its shelves.

The water came from Poland Spring’s Hollis bottling plant, and a corporate spokeswoman said the contamination appeared to be an isolated incident.

She said there was no indication that the contamination occurred at the plant.

Bernie King of the Bridgton police said the chemical had an ammonia-like smell. He said there was no evidence that the containers had been tampered with.
