76ers 93, Heat 90

MIAMI – Allen Iverson scored 35 points and the Philadelphia 76ers withstood a second-half comeback and frantic finish to defeat the Miami Heat 93-90 Friday night.

The Heat fell behind by 19 points with three minutes left in the third period before they rallied. Miami missed three 3-pointers down the stretch that would have tied the game, including a 24-footer by Lamar Odom with two seconds to go.

Iverson missed 16 of 23 shots but went 16-for-17 from the line and scored the game’s final points on a basket with 21 seconds left. The NBA scoring leader is averaging 38.8 points in his past four games.

Playing before a crowd of about 3,000 due to a snowstorm, Jason Kidd added 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his 54th career triple-double to help the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions (8-11) take a little pressure off coach Byron Scott.

SALT LAKE CITY – Matt Harpring scored 20 points and Utah held the Los Angeles Clippers to their lowest point total of the season despite the return of Elton Brand in an 86-67 win.

NEW ORLEANS – Maurice Taylor came off the bench to score 17 points and Cuttino Mobley added 16 with sharp 3-point shooting as the Houston Rockets defeated the New Orleans Hornets 83-74 Friday night.

Spurs 105, Magic 94

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic put up a good fight but still lost their team-record 18th straight game, allowing San Antonio’s Tim Duncan to score a season-high 47 points in the Spurs’ 105-94 win Friday night.

The Magic came back from an 18-point deficit in the first half and held a five-point advantage entering the final quarter after Tracy McGrady had 16 of his 28 points in the third period.

But Orlando missed 16 of 21 shots down the stretch to surpass the previous longest losing streak in franchise history set in 1991-92. McGrady missed his final nine shots as the Spurs closed the game with an 18-7 run.

Rasho Nestorovic added 12 points for the Spurs, who snapped a four-game losing skid. Ron Mercer scored seven of his 11 points in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter to kick off the Spurs’ comeback.

Duncan shot 19-for-33 from the field and 9-for-13 from the line in falling six points shy of his career high. He also had 12 rebounds for his 15th double-double in 16 games.

Orlando, after falling behind 51-33 late in the second quarter, looked as if it would spend the rest of the night in a futile battle against the inevitable. The Spurs, it appeared, were too big, too disciplined and too good.

But Orlando held fast, outscoring the Spurs 11-4 to cut the deficit to 11 at the break. Drew Gooden came off the bench to score 12 of his season-high 23 points in the period.

The Magic’s third quarter was crisp. Tyronn Lue had a 3-pointer and three-point play on consecutive possessions to bring Orlando within two.

McGrady went to the free-throw line 11 times and made them all. His three foul shots with 8:15 left in the period put the Magic ahead 60-59 for their first lead since 12-11.

Orlando scored a season-high 36 points in the quarter, making 10 of 18 shots and 14 of 16 free throws. The Magic led by eight on McGrady’s 3-pointer with 4:32 remaining and settled for a 80-75 edge after three.

Mercer hit a jumper, followed by a three-point play off a fast break, then another jumper. In less than 90 seconds, the Spurs had jumped ahead by two.

The teams traded baskets before San Antonio put the game away over the final eight minutes. Duncan’s easy basket in the post for a nine-point lead with 4:10 remaining put him above the 40-point mark.

Gallows humor was in the air before the game. Former Orlando center Jeff Turner, now the team’s radio analyst, announced to the press that he was available if anyone wanted to ask him about the Magic’s other 17-game losing streak.

That skid began Dec. 4, 1991 and ended Jan. 7, 1992, when Orlando won 104-103 at Seattle. Turner recalled that the Magic had only eight players in uniform for the streak-breaking win.

Notes: San Antonio has won five straight games against Orlando and 10 of the last 12. … The Spurs are 3-1 on the road against Eastern Conference teams, but have lost all six road games against squads from the West. … Before the game, San Antonio bought out the remainder of guard Anthony Carter’s contract. He had missed 13 games with knee tendinitis. … Orlando activated shooting guard Shammond Williams, who had missed nine games with a sprained left knee, and placed rookie guard Reece Gaines on the injured list with right knee patella tendinitis. … Spurs forward Malik Rose did not dress because of a strained tendon in his right ankle.
