Trafton Teague drops in three, key free throws to lift the Beavers.
WATERVILLE – Trafton Teague went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final 35 seconds of play to lift the University of Maine at Farmington to a 74-71 non-conference men’s basketball victory over Colby College Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Travis Magnusson poured in 26 points while Luke Nielson added 15 points for the Beavers (3-2). The White Mules (3-5) were paced by Patrick McGowan who matched Magnusson with 26 points and Andrew Jenkins who chipped in 14 points.
E. Conn. 80, USM 78
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut University used a 13-2 spurt midway through the second half to erase a four-point deficit and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 80-78 in their season opener of Little East Conference men’s basketball play Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 58-54 Michael Kipphut ignited the decisive run with a jumper, and Martin Kokoszka, who came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points, buried a three-pointer with 10:41 left in regulation to give the Warriors (4-2) the lead for good.
USM was paced by Jason Levesque with a team-high 22 points and Ryan Garland with a 19-point effort.
Women’s basketball
Emmanuel 76, Colby 66
BOSTON, MA – Evita Esteves scored a game-high 19 points and Alyssa McCoy added 18 to lead Emmanuel College to a 76-66 overtime win over Colby College in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (5-1) built a 27-19 lead at the intermission but could not withstand a furious rally by the White Mules (3-2), forcing the extra stanza. Colby was paced by Megan Davis with 15 points, while Wendy Bonner and Kate Emery added 13 and 11 points respectively.
USM 73, E. Conn. 59
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Sophomore forward Megan Myles, an Edward Little High School graduate, scored a team-high 14 points as the University of Southern Maine defeated the Eastern Connecticut University 73-59 in women’s basketball action.
The Warriors received a game-high 27 points from senior All-American Allison Coleman. Tiffany Jones, Ashley Marble and Katie Sibley each scored 11 points for USM.
Bates 70, Worcester 51
STANDISH – Betsey Hochadel scored 14 points in a balanced attack as Bates College tagged Worcester State 70-51 in women’s basketball at St. Joseph’s College Saturday.
Olivia Zurek and Kyla Decato tallied nine points apiece, while Meg Coffin and Lauren DuBois recorded eight points each for the Bobcats (4-2).
Men’s hockey
Bowdoin 5, Skidmore 2
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College scored three goals in the third period, handing Skidmore College a 5-2 setback in men’s hockey Saturday afternoon.
Adam Dann tallied his second goal of the game, while Andy Nelson and John Landry put the game out of reach in the decisive third period to allow the Polar Bears (4-1) to register their fourth win of the season.
Skidmore took the early lead as Taylor McKenna scored at 9:20 of the first period, but Bobby Cavanaugh and Dann answered with a goal each in the first period.
Middlebury 6, USM 2
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College used four third-period goals to hand the University of Southern Maine a 6-2 setback in men’s hockey Saturday afternoon.
John Dawson broke a 2-all deadlock at 4:35 of the third period to give the Panthers (4-1) a lead they would not relinquish. Evgney Saidachev, Jeff Smith and Ryan Cahill accounted for the final score as they each found the back of the net in the third period.
The Huskie goals came from Mark Carragher on a pass from Bobby Siers at 12:28 of the first period, and Brian Collins who tallied a second-period goal.
Marc Scheuer made 18 saves to register the victory.
Colby 14, Castleton 0
WATERVILLE – Nick Meintel had a pair of goals and assists as Colby College crushed Castleton State University 14-0 in men’s hockey at Alfond Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Mules (4-1-1) spaced their scoring with five in the first, five in the second and four in the final frame as Patrick Rutherford, Todd O’Hara and Ross MacMillan notched two goals apiece
Chris Ceransky and Branden Gallagher saw a barrage of 60 shots in net for Castleton, while Chris Ries and Ken Pitter defended six shots apiece for the Mules.
Women’s hockey
Maine 1, Northeastern 1
ORONO – The University of Maine’s Sonia Corribeau scored a goal in the second period to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead in women’s hockey.
But the teams played to a 1-1 tie when Northeastern University tied it up with a goal from Stephanie Wood on a pass from Theresa Blla in the third period.
Lara Smart stopped 27 shots for the Black Bears, while Chandra Gunn had 25 saves for Northeastern.
Rensselaer 4, USM 3
TROY, N.Y. – Julie Welte scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist to propel Rensselar Polytechnic Institute to a 4-3 win over the University of Southern Maine in Little East Conference women’s hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Julie Aho and Lane Dielwart rounded out the scoring for the Engineers (8-1-2) in the victory.
The Huskies (3-3-1) were paced by Jessica Lortie, Rachel Wolstadt, Jessica Judge who each scored a goal.
Clarkson 11, Colby 1
CANTON, N.Y. – Ashley Shaidle had five goals and Lindsay Williams scored four goals to pilot Clarkson University to an 11-1 triumph over Colby College in women’s ice hockey action Saturday.
Williams scored the first goal of the game at 5:55 of the opening period, but the Mules responded with a game-tying unassisted shot from first-year forward Jennifer McAleer at 7:51.
Alex Harris stopped 33 shots on goal for Colby.
