RUMFORD – Nearly $3,000 was raised Thursday night at a benefit supper and raffle to help pay medical expenses for one injured teen and to set up a scholarship in memory of another.

Both young people were involved in an accident in September that killed Cory Bouthot, a 2003 Mountain Valley High School graduate, and seriously injured MVHS junior Monica Chenard.

The high school’s National Honor Society coordinated the fund-raiser, with the help of several adults known as the Chenard Benefit Committee, and honor society adviser Dorothy Peters.

More than 300 people turned out at the Eagles Hall where Gov. John Baldacci helped serve his family’s famous spaghetti sauce and pasta.

“It was a wonderful event. We had a tremendous crowd,” said Peters.

Monica Chenard is a member of the high school’s National Honor Society.

Peters said she, the Chenard Benefit Committee and members of the honor society will now sit down to look at Chenard’s medical costs and the scholarship needs.

She said the group will work with members of Cory Bouthot’s family to determine the criteria for awarding a scholarship to a senior who graduates in 2004.

“I’m very proud of what the National Honor Society did,” said Peters.
