A couple years back, I posed a question (on this very page). Why is this area called central Maine, when Lewiston and Auburn are no where near the central part of this state? Augusta is closer, and that is still south of the center. Maybe it was for media purposes, it sure sounds better than identifying L/A as “The northwest of Portland – south of Augusta area!”

Well, here I go again. In a recent Sun Journal story, a robbery was committed in a downtown store (Nov. 29). The store? Sears! Either Sears opened a store downtown and didn’t bother to tell anyone (except the reporter) or now the Lewiston Mall is considered part of “downtown.”

The Greyhound bus station moved out to the turnpike. Let’s include that area as downtown. Then we can tell people coming to “central Maine,” yes, the bus stops in downtown Lewiston.

After all, it’s about perception isn’t it? It’s all about what we perceive to believe. Tell the people something often enough, they generally will accept it as true over time.
