This letter has been composed in my head for the past month. I truly had an ongoing debate with myself over whether I should set myself up for in possible retribution for my public comments.

I want to express to Auburn Mayor Normand Guay my empathy for the anguish he and his family were placed under by the immoral, Gestapo-like tactics used by certain officers of the Auburn Police Department in an effort to discredit and ruin him for their personal gain and entertainment.

Foul, I say. I wonder how all those who were celebrating this, along with the officers involved, can sleep at night? How can we trust those who are placed in a position of enforcement when we know they are fabricating lies and getting their kicks on the ruination of a human being and its ripple effect on others? They do nothing to promote the integrity of the position they are sworn to serve.

It is the knowledge of that ripple effect on the families of those officers and celebrants that I do not advocate their ruination in turn. I have found, as I have matured, that that rage for retribution, however justified, does nothing to promote any good, but only furthers hatred, distrust and erodes the soul.

That does not mean that something should not be done in punishment for their crime. At the very least, Mayor Guay should be able to confront his accusers and hear their heart-felt (I would hope!) apologies.
