WATERFORD – The regularly scheduled December meeting of the Waterford Historical Society will be the annual Christmas Party at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.
The meeting will be potluck finger foods and desserts, so members should bring something to share. All meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
Cynthia Hamlin, society program director, will host the party at her historic home (the “Big House”) in South Waterford Village. The house was built in 1810 as a hotel/carriage house and is listed in the 1875 Waterford History as the Bear Mountain Inn or the Houghton Hotel. In later years it was owned and operated by the Brown family as the Oscar Brown Hotel.
Hamlin’s great-grandfather, W.K. Hamlin, well known businessman and entrepreneur of Waterford City, purchased the property in 1912. W.K., as he was known to fellow townspeople, embarked upon a major renovation of the building that increased the size to its current 21 rooms, changed the direction of the roof line, added a third floor and converted the use to a single-family home.
Cynthia is the fourth generation of her family to own the home, which is occupied by four generations of the family.
For more information about the meeting call Hamlin at 583-6597.
