Heather Ernest drops in a game-high 21 points for the Black Bears.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Heather Ernest poured in a game-high 21 points and hauled down 15 rebounds to lead the University of Maine to a 63-62 win over Drake University in overtime Sunday afternoon.

The Black Bears (4-2) outscored Drake 8-7 in the overtime stanza to pull out the win.

Melissa Heon added 15 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

The Bulldogs (2-3) were led by Linda Sayavongchanh and Nicole Denmon who scored 16 and 12 points respectively.

Wesleyan 52, Bates 51

STANDISH – Hannah Stubbs scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Wesleyan University to a 52-51 win over Bates College in the championship round of the Cole Farms Classic Tournament held at St. Joseph’s College Sunday afternoon.

Amy Posocco added 13 points in the victory.

The Bobcats (4-3) were paced by Olivia Zurek with a team-high 19 points.

Worcester State 58,

St. Joseph’s 57

STANDISH – Amanda Knowles, Kathy Ward and Trishia Crane each scored 10 points to lead Worcester State to a 58-57 win over host St. Joseph’s College in the consolation round of the Cole Farms Classic Sunday afternoon.

Morgan Brownlee paced the Monks (3-4) attack with a game-high 14 points while Laura Pelky chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Husson 62, UMPI 46

BANGOR – Husson College defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 62-46 in the championship game of the 38th annual Paul Bunyan Tournament played at Husson College Sunday.

The Braves were paced by Holly Gracie and Shaunna Mullenix with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The consolation game saw the University of Maine at Machais down the University of Maine at Augusta 88-36.

UMM placed five players in double digits led by Gill Guest with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Angela Qualey added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Tournament MVP was former Eastgate standout Annie McIntosh. McIntosh had 20 points, 12 rebounds, eight blocks, four assists, and three steals over the weekend.

Hollie Gracie (Husson), Erica McGary (UMPI), Rachel Larlee (UMPI), Gill Guest (UMM), and Rachel Fury (UMA) joined McIntosh on the All-Tournament squad.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 8, Caselton 0

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College scored six power play goals as they handed Caselton State an 8-0 setback in men’s hockey action Sunday afternoon.

Greg McCannell scored the first of his two goals at 2:20 of the first period, converting a pass from Mike Chute and Mike Stevens for the only goal the Polar Bears (5-1-0) would need. Sophomore goalie George Papachristopolous notched a shutout, stopping nine shots.

Women’s hockey

Maine 2, Northeastern 1

ORONO – Sonia Corriveau scored the winning goal, converting a feed from Andrea Steranko and Bridget LaFlamme at 1:09 of the second period, as the University of Maine skated to a 2-1 win over Northeastern University Sunday.

Karen Droog gave the Black Bears (5-7-3) the early lead as she deposited the puck in the back of the goal at 9:19 of the first period.

Northeastern broke up the shutout bid with a goal at

10:32 of the third period by Cindy Kenyon. Lara Smart recorded the win in net, turning back 19 shots.

Rensselaer 2, USM 1

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Rosina Schiff stopped 21 of 22 shots to backstop Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III women’s hockey game Sunday afternoon at Houston Field House.

The Engineers were led by Julie Welte and Sarah Daniel who each scored a goal to complete the two-game sweep of the Huskies.

USM’s lone goal came from Kerry Leonard on a ppg at

16:06 of the third period to avoid the shutout.
