RUMFORD – Tune up that creativity.

The River Valley Growth Council and River Valley Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a myriad of community activities at Black Mountain to kick off the Chevrolet 2004 U.S. Cross-Country Championships.

The national event, scheduled for Jan. 3-11, will bring hundreds of skiers and support staff from across the United States and Canada to compete for their respective country’s World Cup team.

Among those events are two that require early registration.

A snow sculpture contest, to be held at various sites around the mountain, will be held all day on Jan. 3. Businesses, families, civic groups, individuals and schools are all invited to participate. The council and chamber must know how many spaces to plan for, as well as how much snow will be needed. Deadline for registration in Dec. 26.

A “Whatever” race that could include a vehicle as simple as a cardboard box or as elaborate as a decorated boat, will be held at noon on Jan. 3 on the Milk Run trail at Black Mountain. Any individual or group who wants to take part must register by Jan. 2.

To register for either event, phone the Growth Council at 369-0396. Trophies for first, second and third places will be awarded for the snow sculptures. Ribbons for first, second and third places will be awarded for the “Whatever” race.

Gov. John Baldacci is expected to oversee the opening ceremonies.

Many other events and community activities will be announced later in the month to welcome the skiers to the national event.
