PERU – The Board of Selectmen announced at Monday’s meeting that it will attend a Dec. 15 meeting to discuss the stalled merger of the Peru school system with SAD 21.

The board will meet with selectmen and School Committee members from all of the towns that would be affected by the merger, including Dixfield, Carthage and Canton. Selectman Jim Pulsifer said he expected the meeting to be held in Dixfield, but was unsure of the exact location. The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m., will be open to the public, but participation will be limited. Afterward, Peru selectmen will go to the town office for their regularly scheduled meeting.

Peru’s selectmen also discussed topics for this Wednesday’s meeting of Med-Care ambulance service’s board of trustees. Ron Chartier, who represents Peru on the board, said that employee health care coverage and pay scale will be on the agenda. Health insurance premiums the corporation pays for its employees are set to increase sharply next year.

According to Chartier, current premiums run about $6,000 per year for a single person, up to around $13,000 for an employee with family coverage. Med-Care, which provides service for 11 area towns, has cost the town of Peru approximately $12 per capita this year.

In his weekly report, Road Commissioner David Gammon said he had tentative plans to place a bid on a used truck being sold by the town of Mapleton. Deadline for bids on the truck is set for Tuesday afternoon and, given the recent snowstorm, Gammon was not sure if he had the time to drive several hours and inspect the truck before bidding.

In other news, negotiations for the sale of Peru’s neighborhood leach field are nearly complete. The leach field is on land next to the elementary school’s basketball court and comprises a small portion of the students’ play area. According to town records, permission for the town to sell the land was given by voters more than a decade ago.
