RUMFORD – A Rumford man, wanted on a charge of felony kidnapping and domestic assault, was arrested Thursday afternoon after he turned himself in to police.

Joshua Mayo, 24, was charged with Class A kidnapping and Class B aggravated assault stemming from an incident that occurred Wednesday. Mayo was released after posting $30,000 surety bail.

Late Monday night, however, police were searching for Mayo, saying he’d violated his bail conditions.

The incident began Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. when Mayo arrived at his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend’s friend’s home in Rumford, said officer James Bernard.

“He showed up and asked for her to step outside and talk to him,” Bernard said. “When she did, he struck her and dragged her to his vehicle, put her inside against her will and struck her several more times in the face, causing her to go unconscious.”

Bernard said Mayo then reportedly drove his pickup truck to a family member’s home in Peru.

“A short time later, she was given a ride back to her friend’s house by the family member who cleaned her up,” Bernard said.

The kidnapping victim sought treatment at Rumford Hospital.

Police learned about the incident from a third party, who called Thursday at 12:39 p.m. Police then contacted Mayo, who agreed to turn himself in, Bernard said.
