Jan Bulis pops in the game-winner to snap a 1-1 tie in the third period.

NEW YORK – Jan Bulis broke a third-period tie and set up Montreal’s other goal in the Canadiens’ 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Bulis got free in the right circle, curled around and snapped a wrist shot over Mike Dunham’s glove at 6:12. Bulis also assisted on Mike Ribeiro’s goal in the first period that gave Montreal a 1-0 lead.

Chris Simon scored in the second period for New York, which lost for the fourth time in five games and the third straight at home. The Rangers are 0-7 in one-goal games.

Martin Rucinsky missed an open net midway through the third that would have tied it for New York.

Blue Jackets 1, Flyers 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sami Kapanen scored with 1:08 left in regulation to lift the Philadelphia Flyers into a 1-1 tie with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.

Columbus goaltender Fred Brathwaite was brilliant all night while stopping 40 shots. Kapanen’s goal came after the Flyers had continually peppered Brathwaite with a series of shots for a full minute.

Brathwaite was at his best in the overtime, however, as he stopped eight shots with the Flyers applying heavy pressure. Philadelphia, which has the NHL’s best record, had a man advantage for most of the extra session.

Brathwaite twice stopped Eric Desjardins in the final minute of overtime and also had late saves on shots by Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte and Mark Recchi.

Blues 3, Leafs 2

TORONTO – Chris Pronger scored 30 seconds into overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over Toronto on Tuesday night, ending the Maple Leafs’ winning streak at eight games.

After Toronto’s Joe Nieuwendyk tied it with a short-handed goal with 17 seconds left in regulation, Pronger scored on the power-play with a 20-foot wrist shot from in front of the net.

Devils 1, Islanders 0

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Patrik Elias, stopped on a penalty shot early in overtime, scored at 2:09 of the extra period to give the New Jersey Devils a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

Elias dropped a pass to Scott Gomez and then went to the net and swatted the return pass into a wide-open net to give Martin Brodeur his league-high sixth shutout of the season and the 70th of his career.

Thrashers 4, Kings 3

ATLANTA – Marc Savard scored his second goal of the game with 1:23 left in overtime, giving the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in a matchup of first-place teams Wednesday night.

The final four minutes of the third period, plus overtime, provided some thrilling end-to-end action.

Slava Kozlov and Shawn McEachern gave Atlanta a 3-2 lead, but Joseph Corvo found the net with just 4.8 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Red Wings 7, Sabres 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and an assist, and Curtis Joseph made 23 saves in the Detroit Red Wings’ 7-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night.

Kris Draper, Mathieu Schneider and Boyd Devereaux each had a goal and an assist and Kirk Maltby and Jiri Hudler also scored for the Red Wings.
