1919 – 2003

LEWISTON – Elwin E. Leighton, 84, of West Minot passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Willimantic. He was the son of the late Clifford and Myrtle Hill Leighton. After graduating from Guilford High School, he served five years in the United States Army during World War II.

He and his wife, Wilma Hatch Leighton, were the first couple married in the West Minot Union Church on Sept. 15, 1946.

He worked at the Woodcrafter’s Mill in Monson, Portland Packing Company in West Minot, and Marcal Paper Mill in Mechanic Falls until he retired in 1980. After his retirement, he worked for several years as a custodian at Bates College.

He loved his family and enjoyed outdoor activities with them, such as camping and fishing. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed the wide variety of birds that came to his feeders.

As a member of the West Minot Union Church, he served as a deacon and a trustee. He was a 50-year member of the West Minot Grange #42, going through all seven degrees of the Pomona, State and National Grange. He was also a 50-year member of the Tyrian Lodge #73 in Mechanic Falls.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years; their three children along with their families, son Harvey and his wife and Sherrie Leighton of West Minot, son Ronald and his wife Janice Leighton of Searsport, and daughter Kathy and her husband Martin Nadeau of Hebron; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Demmons of Skowhegan; and three brothers and their wives, Alton and Marilyn, Clifford and Gloria, and Vergil and Janet, all of Guilford.
