Area residents are invited to visit the shelter to see how they can help or become involved.

AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will open its doors for an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.

The Humane Society encourages area residents to take a closer look at the role their animal shelter plays in enhancing the quality of life in the community. The staff invites everyone to stop by the shelter, visit the animals and find out how they can get personally involved with the shelter.

There are many ways to help: attend the open house, offer a donation of needed supplies, spread the word about responsible pet ownership, volunteer time at the shelter or at one of the shelter’s special events, report animal cruelty and neglect in the community or choose the next pet from among the animals being cared for at the shelter.

The society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals in the area a year. The primary support comes from fund-raising events and donations from residents. The shelter gives back through community services, including animal intake and adoption, animal health services, reuniting people with lost animals, humane education and working with individuals who are disadvantaged or developmentally disabled.

The shelter is located at 3312 Hotel Road. For more information call the shelter at 783-2311 or visit the Web at www.gahumane.org.
