1920 – 2003

PORTLAND – Ambrose K. “Alex” Alexander, 83, a resident of Paris Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 11, at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Black Rock, Ark., on Jan. 7, 1920, a son of James T. and Flora Moore Alexander. He graduated from Hoxie High School and attended the University of Arkansas in Monticello.

He served five years in the United States Army and fought in the Battle of Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, he worked for insurance companies in Louisiana and Oklahoma.

He married Frances Davis on Jan. 8, 1955, and the couple moved to Boston, where they started their family.

He was active as a Lexington Minute Man, a Little League coach, and in the Episcopal Church.

The family moved permanently to Paris Hill in 1967. He finished his career as vice president in charge of claims with York Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1988.

He was active in the Paris Hill Country Club, Historical Society, Old Academy, Sandy Shore Swimming Club, and Hamlin Memorial Library.

He also enjoyed fishing and bird hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years; two children, Ann Hamlin Alexander of Yarmouth ,and John T. Alexander of Concord, N.H.; one granddaughter, Neelam; a brother, Keith Alexander and his wife Susan of Arkadelphia, Ark.; a sister, Ann McClain of Okolona, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Martha Alexander of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and four nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Catherine; and a brother, Jimmy Dean Alexander.
