NEWPORT – Nokomis executed superb shooting from the foul line to take a 62-53 victory over Edward Little in the boys’ basketball season opener Saturday.

The Warriors (1-0) enjoyed an outstanding second quarter, outscoring the Red Eddies 26-14, and played tough throughout, forcing 21 turnovers. Nokomis hit 26-of-31 from the foul line and notching eight 3-pointers in the winning effort.

Senior forward Kenny Poulin took the spotlight in the Red Eddies (0-1) offense with 11 field goals and six free throws to tally a game-high 28 points, while Ryan Ford chipped in with 18 points.

Eastgate 69, Averill 46

NEW GLOUCESTER – Nate Damm exploded for a game-high 34 points as Eastgate Christian Academy handed Averill a 69-46 setback in boys’ basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Aaron Anderson chipped in with 10 points and hauled down 11 rebounds as the Eagles (1-2) cruised to the victory.

Ryan Lamontagne and Dave Arnold scored 20 and 13 points, respectively, for the Beavers (0-3).

Hockey

Greely 5, Win-Dale 3

HALLOWELL – Jessie Blais exploded for a pair of goals and a pair of assists in the second period to propel Greely to a 5-3 win over Winthrop-Hall Dale in hockey action Saturday evening.

After a scoreless first period, the Rangers (1-1) scored first when Andrew Bisbing converted a pass from Bob Harwood and Jeff Fannon at 2:17 for a lead they would not relinquish.

The Ice Dogs’ goals came as Dave St. Hilaire buried the puck on a pass from Nate Frenchette and Adam Beal on a power-play goal at 8:53 of the second period. Beal added a goal in the second period and Frenchette rounded out the scoring with a third-period goal converting a pass from Garrick Wilson at 11:23.
